Measles is a very contagious disease and, in some cases, can be very serious. Up to 80% of unprotected people may develop the disease if they have been in contact with a positive case.
- Young children
- Pregnant women
- People with weakened immune systems
It is possible to be infected and catch the disease without direct contact with someone with measles. For example, just being in the same room as a contagious person, even briefly, can be enough.
Who should get vaccinated?
- People born after 1970
AND
- People who have never received the measles vaccine
OR
- People who have never contracted the disease
If in doubt, people should get vaccinated and have their children vaccinated. There is no risk in receiving another dose of the vaccine if already protected against measles.
According to Quebec's vaccination schedule, children receive a combined vaccine at 12 months and 18 months.
