Lyme disease

Lyme disease is a growing problem in Quebec

This disease caused by a bacteria spreads to humans mainly through bites from black-legged ticks. Ticks are only a few millimetres long and they often go undetected. They are found mainly in wooded areas, tall grasses and shrubs. They attach to the skin when you brush by them. Infected ticks can then spread the disease if they aren’t removed quickly.

In Quebec, these ticks are found mainly in Montérégie, the south-west part of Mauricie-et-Centre-du-Québec, and the northern area of the Eastern Townships. Lyme disease is on the rise in Quebec.

To avoid tick bites, take simple measures to protect yourself. When hiking, for example, stick to trails, wear long and light-coloured clothing, and use bug spray. If you or a family member does get bitten, carefully remove the tick from the skin as soon as possible.
