Palliative and end-of-life care

The Act respecting end-of-life care was adopted on June 5, 2014 and assented to on June 10, 2014. The provisions of this act came into force on December 10, 2015.

Palliative and end-of-life care is for people of all ages who have an incurable disease that limits their lives in the relatively short term. This type of care isn’t just for people with cancer. It is also for people with heart and respiratory illnesses, degenerative neurological diseases, and dementia.

Palliative and end-of-life care is also for families. It includes support, psychosocial counselling, and respite throughout all stages of the illness and mourning period.

End-of-life care

An Act respecting end-of-life care sets out an overall integrated vision of palliative and end-of-life care. It ensures that people in the final stage of their lives can access the quality care and support they need to prevent and alleviate suffering. The Act follows the recommendations of the Select Committee on Dying with Dignity.

The Act has two components:

  1. The rights of persons at the end of life, and the organization and framework of end-of-life care, which includes:

  2. Recognition of the primacy of freely and clearly expressed wishes with respect to care, in particular by establishing an /typo3conf/l10n/fr/rtehtmlarea/Resources/Private/Language/fr.locallang_accessibilityicons.xlf:external_link_new_window_altTextadvance medical directives regime.
