Definition of variables

Number of acute care stretchers

Number of stretchers included in the permit. This number includes stretchers for both general and specific evaluations (e.g., cardiac monitoring, mental health). It excludes trauma stretchers, exam/treatment stretchers (in the ambulatory area), and emergency overflow stretchers. It indicates the number of stretchers included in the registry, excluding trauma stretchers (for serious cases) and emergency overflow stretchers.

Number of patients on stretchers

Number of patients on a stretcher, including patients waiting to be admitted to hospital and patients on trauma stretchers and emergency overflow stretchers. Patients who need a stretcher just to be evaluated or who have been put on a stretcher out of compassion should not be considered as patients on a stretcher but rather as ambulatory patients. This number includes stretchers for people who have a mental health problem.

Number of patients on a stretcher – over 24 hours

Number of patients on a stretcher (acute care, trauma and overflow) whose stay in emergency is equal to or greater than 24 hours. This number includes stays on a stretcher of over 24 hours for people with a mental health problem. It includes stays of 48 hours or more.

Number of patients on a stretcher – over 48 hours

Number of patients on a stretcher (acute care, trauma and overflow) whose stay in emergency is equal to or greater than 48 hours. This number includes stays on a stretcher of over 48 hours for people with a mental health problem.

Number of patients who have arrived by ambulance

Number of patients (on a stretcher and ambulatory) who arrived by ambulance between 12:00 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. the day before the date of the report. This number includes patients transferred from another institution or facility and who have been registered at the ER. It includes all ambulances whose patients have been directed to the ambulatory area.
